In Which Cambodian More Cambodian

Kalyan Keo, a prospective ambassador of Cambodia, in a few hours, is leaving her home country as a young Cambodian Fulbright scholar for the United States to continue her higher education. There, she hopes to major in Public Administration at Maxwell school of Syracuse University, NY. She’s getting back home in twelve months. My best wishes to you (and sorry that I couldn’t join your farewell dinner party).

22-year-old Keo Kalyan is a hopeful ambassador of Cambodia’s newest generation of leaders. In a country where only one girl attends secondary school for every three boys, Kalyan already holds bachelor degrees in Business Administration and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Tharum Bun sat down with the young scholar to find out more about her life, goals, and weblogs.

Also, Somongkol Teng, currently a Fulbright scholar in Boston, hopes to continue a Ph.D. in International Higher Education.

I am now pursuing my Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration at Boston College in Boston, Massachussetts, USA, under a Fulbright grant from the US State Department. I am expecting to finish by December 2007, after which, in case luck is on my side, I might go on for a Ph. D. in International Higher Education.

From Kingdom of Cambodia to United States of America - Long time readers of Global Voices have good reason to stereotype young Cambodian bloggers as intelligent, ambitious, and hard-working. Tharum Bun gives us even more evidence to support the claim in this interview with Fulbright scholar and blogger, Somongkol Teng.

Stay tuned, I have been gathering ideas to run another interview with Somongkol as part the series. It will be about his life in the modern America, in Khmer language.

That is great news about Kalyan Keo - will she be at the Summit? Mongkol told me he might be in Cambodia at that time and it will be very nice to spend time with him in country.
