Like holding the world in hand
A fascinating story of a jobless and homeless American man who hitchhiked in Europe in his adulthood, now an ambassador to Cambodia, is a lesson for young people. At 20 he dropped out of colllege, became an upholsterer, and then moved on to wander in Europe. 30 years later it was completely changed.
In an article ‘The vagabond who became an ambassador’ Joseph Mussomeli, a newly appointed US ambassador to Cambodia, talked to Charles McDermid of the Phnom Penh Post about how he entered foreign diplomacy, his 25 years of foreign service for five presidents, and his view on foreign policy of his government. It is quite interesting to understand his definition on deplomacy and his view on new generation of Cambodia:
“There are lots of aspects to diplomacy. Most of it is communication. Most of it is making sure people perceive and understand your government and what its priorities and concerns are…”
“Also, the new generation is Westernized - in the good way. They’re not afraid of dialogue and disagreement. They’re curious about the rest of the world. I think the long-term prognosis for this country is actually very good - economically and politically.”
Bill Gates of Microsoft and Steve Jobs of Apple Computer also did not finish college to reach a milestone. Can they foresee The Road Ahead?
