Cambodian family of Canadian… help?
Date: 2/12/2005 11:02 PM
Greetings,
I am from Ontario, Canada and I have been following a news story about a gentleman who died in a fire (arson) in our area. It has been two weeks now and the police have been unable to reach his family in Cambodia, but have now released his name. Since I have a photoblog, it occurred to me to seek out a fellow blogger in Cambodia who perhaps could assist? I am taking this contact with you upon myself, as a private citizen… I have no ties to the police department but feel it is important that the man’s family be found.
Here is the information, perhaps if you could find further information you could contact the Kingston Police Department.
Victim’s name: Kariroath Hoboun, age 41
Possibly from: Phnom Penh

LeeAnn Beer,
I received your email few days ago, but have not got idea to do something just yet.
I am appreciated you as a Canadian citizen for being so helpful to Cambodian people. It is a bit difficult to find out people’s relative here, in Cambodia. We have neither a comprehensive whitepage, nor a helpful assistance from the authorities unless we… Once in a while I saw Cambodian people living in abroad announce to seek for their long lost relatives on local media. But this is expensive, too.
For the time being, what I can do is to forward your email (if you allow me to include your name) to some local mailing lists as well as online announcement available. And I will talk to friends to find out more ways to help.
Regards,
ThaRum

Greetings ThaRum,
Thank you for replying! Yes, certainly feel free to pass my message along to anyone who may be able to help (if you need to post an email address, please use ). I thought perhaps there could be difficulties with the Cambodian police, as it is unfathonable to me that they cannot locate *someone* after more than 2 weeks.
I cannot imagine being this poor man’s family, and having no idea he has passed away and a murder charge has been laid (result of arson).
There was another article in the paper today, that the man charged with his murder has also been charged with another arson in the same home last year. The owners of the home have now been charged with criminal negligence causing death as well.

In our court system sometimes the criminals will get more time if there are victim impact statements (the man’s family are also considered victims of the crime).
Hoping for the best, thank you for caring.
LeeAnn
