Video-Based Desktop Setup

I plan to buy a computer desktop in the next few months. Specifically it will be used to capture, edit, and deliver DVD quality output of event movie. I now have a Panasonic DV Camcorder, which can be record 25 fps PAL video.

Motherboard and Processor
Recently, I go through Intel site as I would prefer to opt for Intel based desktop and probably one with supporting Hyper Thread technology. At the moment, however, I have not decided to choose whether an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Supporting HT Technology and Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme Edition. And I will go for Pentium® 4 Processor-based boards.

Hard drive
I have not got any idea yet. As far as I know, RAID, SCSI, and SATA can be good for video processing, but not exactly which one good enough.

Video Graphics Array (VGA card)
NVIDIA and Geforce and ATI Radeon is in mind at the moment, but I do not know which one is better than the other for video desktop. I prefer the card to be placed AGP slot rather than PCI slot. However, I still have doubt with latest motherboard from Intel introduces Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme Edition, which has an PCI Express for VGA.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
It is said that when it comes to RAM: Bigger is better, Biggest is Best. At the beginning I am going to install at least 1 Gb, and more later.

I received your email and although I am not a “video expert” in the field, I would recommend Mac’s. I do not use Mac’s or own one, but many of my friends who were (and are) seriously into video editing use them and the tools that the Mac’s have and the effects my friends produce are hard to come by on a PC. That is my input for now, you can check out Mac’s website or even go to Alien Ware which is another great place to shop (both can be expensive though). I hope this has helped you out. Any other questions just let me know. Selah!

Thanks very much indeed. I have visited Alienware, and found such a great resource, especially detail specification of desktops for Creative/Professional user. I can learn from it and build a custom PC for video works.

I have never paid attention on Macintosh, but will shift to focus on this before making a decision. However, I do not think I can afford it as it is much more expensive than PC desktop.
